Ivan Illich’s “Deschooling Society”: Institutional Spectrum

In chapter four Illich builds a spectrum of societal institutions, left and right. Not having the political connotations we associate with those terms, the author gives examples spanning the two extremes. Illich also talks about false public utilities, of which he considers school the most “insidious” (though automobiles are not far behind!). This video closes with an observation of how some words have changed since the 1970s (, “teen-age” now “teenage,” “life style” now “lifestyle”).
