“No society in history has been able to survive without ritual or myth.” In this chapter Illich discusses how modern schooling fulfills the threefold job of past religions: keeper of the myth, perpetuation of the myth, and conductor of the ritual with passes on the myth. To what end? To produce a capitalistic consumer.
